Happy Halloween!!

Ahh...another holiday has come and gone!  Since my little one has been born I feel like the days pass so much faster now!

My daughter is OBSESSED with Mickey's Clubhouse, especially the "Hot Dog" dance.  No matter where she is in the house, if that song comes on she will run to the T.V. and start dancing...love it!  For those of you who don't regularly tune into the show, at the very end, before all the credits, Mickey and his friends recap the show and dance to the same song (the "Hot Dog" song...not sure if that is the "official" name, but it is what I call it).

About a month ago while searching for a Halloween costume I came across a wonderful sale at the Disney Store.  Minnie Mouse seemed to be calling my name and fit perfectly with her current obsession!

Here are some pics from our weekend.  Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween!

P.S.  In honor of one of my favorite holidays...use the coupon code "HappyHalloween" in our Etsy shop for FREE shipping!!

20 uses for Vinegar

Here are 20 unusual, thrifty, and eco-friendly uses for vinegar that you may not have thought of.

1. Condition hair-- Using apple cider vinegar as a rinse after shampooing really does work like a dream. It removes residue from the hair shaft and closes the cuticles. Just add half a tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of water, plus a few drops of essential oil if you like.

2. Kill weeds-- Forget pricey weed killers full of toxic ingredients -- household vinegar really does kill unwanted plants; stronger vinegar made for horticultural use, which is 25% acetic acid, works even better.

3. Remove underarm stains-- Unsightly sweat stains can really ruin an otherwise beautiful blouse. Spray full-strength white vinegar on the stain before washing, and it will disappear.

4. Soften fabrics-- Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle, and not only will it prevent lint from clinging to your clothes and keep colors bright, it’ll also remove soap scum from both the clothes you’re washing and the washing machine itself.

5. Remedy sore throats-- Many people recommend sipping or gargling with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water to soothe a sore throat.

6. Deter ants-- Got trails of tiny ants weaving their way around your home? These annoying insects aren’t big fans of vinegar, so spraying a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water anywhere you have seen them can help encourage them to move out.

7. Soak sore muscles-- Apple cider vinegar helps draw out lactic acid, which accumulates in muscles after exercise, causing that sore feeling. Mix a few tablespoons of vinegar into a cup of water, dip a cloth in the mixture, and apply it to sore areas for 20 minutes.

8. Freshen air-- Whether it’s smoke, mildew, pet odor, or lingering whiffs of burnt casserole, bad smells can make a home less than welcoming. Acetic acid in vinegar absorbs odors, so spritzing it around the room will neutralize the smells. You can also use it to wipe down surfaces in the room that needs freshening.

9. Remove stickers-- Warm a little bit of white vinegar on the stovetop or in the microwave and then dip a rag into it. Hold the rag over the sticker until it’s thoroughly saturated, and it will peel right off without leaving sticky residue behind. This trick also loosens wallpaper adhesive.

10. Cure hiccups-- Thousands of people who swear by vinegar as a way to ease these involuntary spasms. It’s not clear how a shot of vinegar would actually help -- other than to distract you with its acidic flavor -- but next time you’ve got a bout of the hiccups, give it a try.

11. Clean crusty paintbrushes-- Fill a saucepan with undiluted white vinegar and bring it to a boil over medium heat. Dip the paintbrushes into the boiling vinegar, one at a time, dragging the bristles along the bottom of the pan. Continue this process until the paint is dissolved.

12. Dissolve rust-- The acetic acid in vinegar reacts with iron oxide to remove rust from small metal items like hinges, nuts and bolts. Simmer them in a saucepan full of vinegar, then rinse well with water to prevent the vinegar from further affecting the metal.

13. Eliminate stale odors-- Either wipe down the surface well with white vinegar or, in severe cases, leave a cloth soaked in vinegar in the container for a few hours to absorb the odors.

14. Remove mineral deposits-- Run a mixture of half water, half white vinegar through your coffee machine to remove them. Use straight vinegar as a rinsing agent in your dishwasher to prevent buildup, and wrap a vinegar-soaked cloth around stained faucets until the deposits can be easily scrubbed away. To clean a clogged showerhead, remove it from the pipe and place it in a saucepan full of white vinegar.

15. Neutralize spice in foods-- You’ve got a dinner disaster on your hands: One too many shakes of cayenne powder has turned your award-winning chili into an inedible five-alarm blaze, and your guests are waiting at the table. Vinegar to the rescue! Add white or apple cider vinegar to your food, one teaspoon at a time, to neutralize the spice.

16. Prolong the life of cut flowers-- Bouquets of cut flowers brighten a room all too briefly, often wilting after just a few days. Squeeze a little extra enjoyment out of your arrangements by adding two tablespoons of white vinegar per quart of water in the vase, which will keep them perky just a little bit longer.

17. Clean glass, plastic, chrome, and floors-- A half-and-half solution of water and white vinegar will cut the grime on the shelves and walls of the refrigerator and eliminate spoiled-food smells too. Full-strength vinegar will remove tough smudges on glass and make porcelain sinks shine. Make it into a paste with a little baking soda to scrub chrome, or mix 1/3 white vinegar with 1/3 rubbing alcohol, 1/3 water, and 3 drops of dishwashing liquid for an economical floor cleaner. Just be sure not to get vinegar on marble, granite, or slate surfaces.

18. Treat fungal infections-- White vinegar and apple cider vinegar can both be applied topically to affected areas of the body to kill fungus. For foot-related ailments, soak in a solution of one part vinegar to five parts water for about 30 minutes a day.

19. Tenderize and kill bacteria in meat-- Marinate meat overnight in apple cider vinegar, and it will be delectably tender. This can reportedly also kill the bacteria that causes food-borne illnesses, including e. coli.

20. Open drains and freshen garbage disposals-- Clear a clogged drain without the nasty, headache-inducing chemicals. Dump about 3/4 cup of baking soda down the drain and chase it with 1/2 cup white vinegar, then plug the drain. Leave it for about 30 minutes before rinsing with a kettle full of boiling water. You can use the same trick to clean and deodorize garbage disposals, or freeze vinegar in an ice cube tray and grind them up in the disposal to clean and sharpen the blades at the same time.

Thanks Marco!  You know how much I love vinegar:)

Toddler Halloween Activity

This afternoon my little peanut and I wanted to do something fun for Halloween since it is two (short) weeks away (can you believe it?!?).  Here is what we came up with:

Does this look like something you would be interested in doing?  If so, here is what we did.

It all started a few weeks ago when I was searching around for a fun, toddler-friendly halloween activity.  I came across this page and printed out a few copies with the intention to do an alphabet project.  Instead of using the ghosts for the alphabet (a cute idea, maybe for another time), I decided to cut out only 7 ghosts - the length of her name.  Using a sharpie marker, I wrote each letter of her name on one ghost.

Next came the best part - coloring the "friendly" ghosts!  I gave my little one two different orange crayons.  Since I am dealing with an almost 2 year old, we put each ghost on top of an old magazine just in case she missed coloring in the lines:)

Finally when the ghosts were a nice color orange, we put a little glue dot (left over from my scrapbooking days) on each clothespin (7 in total) and stuck a ghost on top.  I hung up some string using the 3M command "damage-free" clips (these are great because they don't remove the paint) and clipped each letter on.

Ta-da!   Simple, cute and helps to put our house in the Halloween spirit:)

What you didn't know about GARLIC

Did you know that the component of garlic, allicin, which causes the familiar strong smell and flavor, is actually an extremely effective antioxidant? As allicin digests in your body it produces sulfenic acid, a compound that reacts faster with dangerous free radicals than any other known compound. Garlic is also a triple threat against infections due to its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It is effective at killing antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including MRSA, as well as fighting yeast infections, viruses and parasites.

Thanks Marco!

Little Guy's 1st Birthday Shirt:)

This weekend we celebrated a very special little boy's 1st birthday - my brother-in-laws godson/nephew!

I made this for him to wear on his special day.  Originally his mommy was thinking a navy, long-sleeved shirt; but since we had an unusually hot October weekend forecast, at the last minute we decided to go with short-sleeve.  I searched high and low but couldn't find a navy short-sleeve anywhere (out of season at this point on the NE) so we ended up with a white shirt instead.  I think it turned out just fine.

Happy 1st Birthday Frankie!!!!!

Run Momma, Run!

About two months ago we started training for a 5K...our very FIRST race ever!  About 3 or 4 times a week, we would meet up and run; building up the total distance each time in .5 mile increments.  This schedule seemed to work better for us then the "couch to 5k" training plan that I had found online.  On September 3rd, we ran and I am proud to report...finished!!

This weekend I will enter my 3rd 5k race!  I hope my time has improved, but to be honest, I doubt it :)  The weather has gotten colder and the sun sets earlier making it much harder to find the time to run with my little munchkin!  I am attempting to wake up early in the morning and "train" before the sun rises...will keep you posted on this journey!

For any of you on the east coast, I recently got new shoes and inserts that I am just in love with so much that I had to share!!  A friend told me to head over to Road Runner Sports in Paramus, NJ and boy am I glad that he mentioned this place!  Here are the new sneakers I chose based on the outcome of my assessment (the friendly staff took a look at my arches, running style, etc) - I was partial to getting a pair of pink ones:)

Sunday will be the first time I race with my new shoes and I am so excited to see how it goes!!

Welcome to my blog!

Two sasters was started by...two sisters:)  We are 14 months apart and aside from going away to college, once we moved out of Mom and Dad's, we haven't lived more then a few miles apart.  "Saster" is a term that was coined by us...it just sounds so much better then just plain old "sister"...but don't worry - it has the same meaning:)

A few months ago we started an Etsy shop - CGCDesign!  The letters are our initials.  It was inspired by the little model in all of our pictures, our daughter/niece.  We needed an outlet for our creative spirits:)

Recently, we decided to start writing a blog for our Etsy Store, but have so much more to share then just shop updates.  Hopefully with the help of this blog, we will give you shopping tips, coupon specials, craft topics and other fun ideas!

If you haven't already, "like" us on facebook: www.facebook.com/cgcdesign

Thanks for stopping by!!

XOXO
